LOGAN

Logan should have waited for Mallory to tell him that she wouldn’t panic. The last thing he wanted was to give the mother of his child a shock. But the second his bear heard the barest of hints that Logan was about to shift and go all bear on Mallory, the animal exploded out of him.

Mallory gasped and took a few steps back. “Holy shit! Oh, my god! What …”

Logan decided to sit on his back paws. It was the least threatening position he could think of. He waved her over, but his long talons made the gesture aggressive. He groaned his displeasure and smiled at her.

“Holy shit,” Mallory was still repeating. She opened one eye, then the other, before closing them both. When she opened them again at the same time, she blinked quickly. “Did you just turn into a bear?”

He nodded.

“Are you a wizard or something?”

Logan laughed, but his bear body the sound was a terrifying jumble. He groaned again as his head slunk down.

Much to his surprise, Mallory’s hand landed on his furry paw. “This is why you’re naked all the time.” She nudged her chin toward his clothes. They lay in tatters on the forest ground. He nodded and shrugged. “This is an interesting trick you can do, but if you could just be a man again, that’d be great. Because unless I’m having the weirdest pregnancy hallucinations ever, you just turned into a bear. The man that impregnated me is a bear. Am I having a bear?” The edge of panic in her voice made Logan sad.

He changed back into his human form and slipped on an extra pair of jeans from the backpack. Shifting for Mallory was always part of the plan for the day. He needed her away from the house while Blake and Elliot did their job.

Logan also wanted to warn Mallory that their child wasn’t just a bear shifter.

Their son would be his heir. He thought seeing the bear might help her understand.

“Aren’t you cold?” Mallory asked as he stood there in his jeans, barefoot with no shirt.

“Nah. Shifters have a really good metabolism, and I’m a bear. I’m made to hibernate. This isn’t cold,” he grinned.

“Shifters? So you’re not just some really good magician?”

“That wasn’t an optical illusion. The world is full of shifters. All kinds of animals. As I said, there are a few different wolves and big cats in town, but for the most part, we’re from the same bear sleuth.”

Mallory sighed. “Wow. My foster mom was right. When I do things, I don’t do them halfway. I go all out. I don’t just get preggers. I’m a litter carrier.”

Logan couldn’t help but grin. “You saw the twins. They’re cute little babies just like any other, but when they go through puberty, they’ll have their first change.”

“Into bears.”

He nodded. “A cute little bear cub.”

“My kid will be a bear. Any chance my human genes take over and override it or whatever?”

“It might have happened somewhere in the world, yeah.
